Apprenticeship Levy payments are due to start next month and we are asking colleagues who recognise the value of Evolve Health Mentors to show their support for the development of a new Trailblazer Apprenticeship that will further enhance their training.
There has been a lot of coverage recently about the new Trailblazer Apprenticeship agenda, with employers starting to make their levy payments from next month – April 2017.
Within education, schools that fall beneath the £3m wage bill threshold have been told that they still have to make levy contributions if their local authority is the employer, which means that the combined wage bill is well in excess of the £3m threshold. A bigger challenge that has received far less media attention is how schools will be able to invest their levy contributions, since there are limited qualifications available for training their existing workforce.
Apprenticeship qualifications are in development for new teachers, teaching assistants, business managers and administration staff, but what does a school do if they don’t need to appoint any of these roles?
Evolve has been working on this as a natural extension of its Health Mentor Training Programme. Over the past five years many schools have asked if learning mentors, teaching assistants and even teachers can enrol on the Level 4 Qualification in Health Mentoring due to the role and impact that Health Mentors have within schools. Developing a Trailblazer Apprenticeship version of this hugely successful training programme will allow schools to benefit from this pioneering work by providing an excellent CPD opportunity for existing school staff.
Set at Level 4, the Health Mentoring qualification is the perfect progression opportunity for school support staff and will develop capacity within the existing workforce to more effectively support the pastoral needs of children and young people. With the increasing challenge of poor mental health and physical inactivity, this training course will give schools the expertise, strategy and focus to enhance their offer to pupils in these areas.
The imminent introduction of the Healthy Schools Rating Scheme, Healthy Schools Capital Funding and the doubling of the PE and School Sport Premium means that this training programme will enable and empower support staff within schools to take a lead in these emerging areas. At a time when recruitment and retention are so important, measures that enhance staff motivation, longevity and morale should be embraced with open arms.
Support for the development of this qualification has been such that we are working with universities and hospital trusts to model their own version of the Health Mentor’s role that will add similar value to their respective settings. This is the reason why the job title in the Trailblazer Qualification has been broadened to Health and Wellbeing Mentor.
An Employer Group has been created to lead on the development of this new apprenticeship standard, which includes representatives from schools, universities and hospital trusts, spanning public, private, charity and third sectors.
